"Gay bishop preps for pre-inauguration event"
... by Lauren Collins, NECN reporter

(NECN: Manchester, New Hampshire) - The Right Reverend Gene Robinson
got the call a few weeks ago and says, "When someone called and
introduced themselves as being from the inaugural committee, it was
very exciting to hear."

Particularly so because the committee invited the Episcopalian Bishop
to give the invocation at Sunday's (1-18-09) inaugural kick-off event
at the Lincoln Memorial. He'd met with the President-Elect several
times as Obama campaigned in New Hampshire and recalls, "He struck me
to be the man he said he was. Which was someone who had as a value to
unite us."

It's a value perhaps best represented in the faith leaders that Obama
has invited to be a part of his auspicious swearing in. Robinson made
history in 2003 when he became the first openly gay man to be
consecrated as a bishop in any faith. On Tuesday (1-20-09), the
Southern Baptist Pastor Rick Warren, who ardently opposes gay
marriage, will give the inaugural blessing.

Two selections Robinson finds fitting because, "This new president
elect is doing precisely what he told us he would do, which was to
include us all in a big tent. And I like to say that there's no one
who had a bigger tent than Jesus."

Yet Robinson won't be invoking the name of Jesus in his remarks. He
won't be quoting scripture either. He wants to offer words that all
Americans, regardless of their faith, can pray along with.

"The first section of the prayer," he says, "actually will be for
America. And for Americans. Because I think we have laid so many
expectations and hopes on this one human being. And I want to remind
everyone watching that we all have a role."

He'll also pray for the 44th president, in his role as a public
servant, as a husband and father, and as the man who has changed the
face of politics in America. These are the remarks that Robinson will
make, surrounded by the historic and exceptionally poignant words
inscribed on the walls of the Lincoln Memorial. A place, he says,
which encapsulates "the best of the dream that we call America."

CNN: "Gay Bishop Giving Obama's 'Pre-Show' Prayer"

New Hampshire Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson, a vocal gay rights
leader, will open President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration with a
prayer on Sunday's kick-off event at the Lincoln Memorial.

"I am writing to tell you that President-Elect Obama and the
Inaugural Committee have invited me to give the invocation at the
opening event of the Inaugural Week activities, 'We are One', to be
held at the Lincoln Memorial," Robinson wrote in an email to friends.

The announcement comes after weeks of outcry from the gay community
over Obama's choice of evangelical, anti-gay pastor Rick Warren to
deliver the inaugural invocation (on Tuesday, 1-20-09).

"A message from Bishop Gene Robinson"
Monday Jan 12, 2009 1:22 pm

I am writing to tell you that President-Elect Obama and the Inaugural
Committee have invited me to give the invocation at the opening event
of the Inaugural Week activities, "We are One," to be held at the
Lincoln Memorial, Sunday, January 18, 2009, at 2:00 pm. It will be
an enormous honor to offer prayers for the country and the new
president, standing on the holy ground where the "I have a dream
speech" was delivered by Dr. King, surrounded by the inspiring and
reconciling words of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. It is
also an indication of the new president's commitment to being the
President of ALL the people. I am humbled and overjoyed at this
invitation, and it will be my great honor to be there representing
the Episcopal Church, the people of New Hampshire, and all of us in
the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.
