Massimo Consoli [1946-2007],attivista & storico italiano gay-2

Massimo Consoli [1946-2007],
attivista & storico italiano gay

==========

Dear friends:

Massimo Consoli was a prolific writer, of more than 30 major books
and many thousands of articles, mostly on historical topics related
to the gay liberation movements, mostly in Italy but also in other
countries. His personal library, a vast collection of gay-related
materials, is considered the largest such archive in Italy; and, as
greatly desired by Consoli himself, it is now being maintained in its
entirety by the Italian government.

Unfortunately, not much of his literary works have been translated
into English yet, as far as I can determine presently. Much of his
writings deserve to be better known, in the English-speaking world,
especially about the early homosexual rights movements during the
latter 1880s / early 1900s, including the German activists and the
English/Irish writer Oscar Wilde.

Article [excerpt]: "Massimo Consoli [1945-2007]"

Consoli's editorial and literary activity is notable for its range
and visibility. He was interviewed frequently on radio and
television, almost always in his role as founder of the Italian gay
movement.

He authored some thirty books and thousands of articles for
newspapers and journals. His plays were produced successfully and he
was also known as a poet, but most of his writings dealt with
historical topics.

Perhaps his most important books are "Homocaust" (1984, reprint
1991), which describes the Nazi persecution of homosexuals, and "Ecce
Homo" (1998; translated into Greek, 2001), which treats homosexuality
in the Bible. His own personal favorite of his works was "Andata &
Ritorno" (2003), an autobiographical novel in which the protagonist's
serious illness prompts a review of earlier periods of his life. The
more conventional autobiography, "Affetti Speciali" (1999), traces
not only his own life, but also the birth and progress of the Italian
gay movement.

Consoli always enjoyed tracing the history of other gay pioneers,
especially the German homosexual theorist/emancipationist Karl
Heinrich Ulrichs (1825-1895), who spent the last fifteen years of his
life in Italy. After rediscovering the tomb of Ulrichs in L'Aquila
(about 50 miles northeast of Rome) in 1988, he began annual
pilgrimages there on August 28, Ulrichs's birthday. At first he made
these journeys alone, then he was accompanied by more and more
friends, so that by 1995 newspapers began to report on these
commemorations. They became international events.

-----

The various European gay movements have thus been intertwined more
closely with each other, than I had previously known or imagined; and
their connections with other countries, particularly with the USA,
are also very important. The prominent life of Massimo Consoli itself
represents such aspects and their intricate interfaces amongst these
world-wide gay movements, not only within Italy but also with other
European countries as well as with other nations [including the USA].

Someday, Consoli's [and other writers'] historical gay works will be
collated, and perhaps even translated into many other languages; for
indeed, we gay people are verily all interconnected and linked
together -- like mutually interwoven threads of glbti history, even
in our own lifetimes.
